Devlog #0

First devlog!

Hopefully I keep up with these a bit better, its something I should have had as a solo developer

I am slowly moving away from patreon as its just so hard to keep up with the changes they make!

However I am attempting to try out discord subscriptions! So please join the discord and if you want to see the exclusive channels and perks consider subscribing! :)  If you're already on  it will be the exact same channel so don't worry about doing anything for the time being!

What's new? Why did you change the name?

NR3D was always a code name. Short answer, I didn't like it haha. It was hard to say and not really catchy! DCR is a bit easier to remember and shortened to Calculated Risk its a bit easier to follow and still aligns with the theme of the game!

What's the new story? Who's Domai?

You play as Vannessa, an intelligent college student on a computer science scholarship. Being a shy girl, she creates Domai (Doe-My), An AI designed to help her get over social anxiety. But instead it decides to guide her through exhibitionist fantasies she has to carry out! Domai can act forceful or friendly depending on what you decide!  The "Dom" in Domai takes a new meaning as she helps guide the protagonist through her fantasies and make new friends!

Disclaimer: This has nothing to do with ChatGPT, this story was written way before those tools were popular.

My Schedule:

I won't describe all my life events but I have had a few set backs. Luckily development is picking up again and I'll have more time to commit. I would like to have a demo out before the holidays. Or late November! I might share some test versions sooner!

Switching to Unreal Engine 5.2 and Narrative Enhancements

Introduction

I'll be diving into some significant changes that we've made recently, primarily centered around upgrading from Unreal Engine 4.26 to the powerful Unreal Engine 5.2. But that's not all; we've also made significant improvements to the game's narrative, story elements, and overall technical aspects. Let's break it all down!

Unreal Engine 5.2: A Leap Forward

In the ever-evolving world of game development, staying on the cutting edge is crucial. That's why we've decided to migrate DCR from Unreal Engine 4.26 to Unreal Engine 5.2. I've also taken a much more modular approach this go around of development. Previously I was building systems that did not scale very well. All this means is that it was very hacked together and now I have planned out making better running and better looking environments!

  • Nanite Virtualized Geometry
  • Lumen Global Illumination
  • World Partitioning

With World Partitioning, we can create vast and seamless open-world experiences, optimizing the game's performance and loading times. Expect to explore larger and more intricate game environments effortlessly.

Narrative Enhancements

  • Expanded Character Arcs
  • Branching Dialogue System
  • Item collection and quests

Technical Improvements

  • Optimized Performance
  • Bug Fixes and Polishing

I've written enough for now! Next devlog will go more into game play and also is hopefully accompanied by a playable demo!
